Invitation to the Celebration of the launch of Arnos Vale Cemetery

Arnos Vale Cemetery is celebrating the restoration of the buildings and landscape and creation of exhibitions, education and volunteer programs by way of festival and weekend of activities. This starts on Thursday 29 April 2010 with a parade round ceremonial way where the Lord Mayor of Bristol will plant an Irish Yew tree. The main festival is on Saturday 1 May 2010, events on Sunday and come and go as you please days on Friday and Monday Bank Holiday.

The program of events offers something for all ages and many interests including wildlife walks from our expert guides including a dawn chorus walk with TV’s Mike Dilger, owl prowl with Ian McGuire and a twilight bat walk, traditional crafts including stone masonry, making charcoal and pole lathing, Victorian performances, family history and local community groups, live music including the Gasworks Choir, a Victorian tea room and much more. Children's activities include mouse craft, face painting, police car, fire engine and a mini beast hunt. On Sunday Rev Paul Weir from the Churches Together in Knowle group, is leading a service for all faiths and none in the lovingly restored Anglican Chapel focusing on a theme of remembering and featuring the People of Note Choir.

This is all being offered with FREE ADMISSION and is an opportunity for you as our neighbours to come and see what this local 45 acre Victorian heritage, wildlife and education attraction which is on your doorstep, has to offer. Thanks go to the Brislington Community Partnership who has part-funded this event.

Do check out our new web site, Arno's Vale, for more information and to download the program.

Hope to see you there and please do spread the word!

June 19th

On Friday evening we brought music to the park in the form of Holymead Junior School Choir and Recorders, The Salvation Army Youthband and several performers from Brislington Enterprise College.

The sun came out just in time for the school choir and queues at the barbeque never stopped.

The music from all groups was great and provided a good chance for the community to see the talents of local schools. It included everything from Ave Maria, Brass Band to Indie Band and went on for 3 hours.

Everyone finally left the park by 10.30 pm after spending an enjoyable summer's evening listening to good music. Comments following ranged from

'what fantastic music and singing' to
'we will be using the park more often to have family activities'

Our thanks must go to the following, without whom the evening would not have been possible:

• Holymead Junior School Choir, Recorders and Mark Hoskins, Music Teacher for some fantastic singing and recorder music
• Anthony Selfe and the Salvation Army Youthband
• Richard Sykes, Teacher from Brislington Enterprise College for arranging for students to play at the event
• And the young people themselves, many of whom have never performed in the community, especially in a public park

We should also thank those who spent time organising, setting up and putting away as the 'behind the scenes' work is just as important.

POSTPONEMENT

Under 8's Activity Afternoon
Sunday 12th July 2009
1.00 pm – 3.00 pm

Unfortunately due to adverse weather and logistical reasons beyond our control this event has now been postponed.
However, there is a Youth Activity Event on Sunday 6th September from 1.00 pm where the Inflatables and face painting will be available.
This event is mainly aimed at older youths but we will provide activities for younger children, including the majority of those scheduled for this coming weekend.
Sorry for the postponement but watch local noticeboards for posters detailing other events that will be hosted in the park later in the summer.
Many thanks
